It was a wonderful sunny weekend and what better place to enjoy it than at Goodwood in the rolling Sussex countryside. The 'Festival of Speed' is an annual event featuring the un-powered, downhill soap-box race. Some of the members of the Rotary Club of Shepperton are keen auto enthusiasts and attend this meeting informally. This year we had an entrant....... As you can see the soap-box vehicles have not escaped a make-over from the technical types but embody the pure elegance of the simplest form of wheeled transport.
One way of getting extra thrust is to increase the pull of gravity and the entry here has Nigel Lawson as 'pilot', notice the clever use of streamlining. One of the pleasures of this event is the accessibility, you can see what's going on in the pits and even talk to team members. |

| There are lots of wonderful old cars bikes and other vehicles too which are timed doing runs past the grand-stands and up the hill. Of course the Bentleys, famous for their competitions on the Brooklands circuit are represented and famous individuals like Stirling Moss take part. | ||||

The extensive grounds cater for all sorts of participation including rides across open country in military tanks, helicopter rides and simulators. There are lots of places to buy racing memorabilia, tools and even cars, all the major manufacturers have stands - some even have large showrooms. Racing wouldn't be complete without a Formula 1 presence and Renault even built a sky-way for their extraordinary cars.

| The Formula one cars were spectacular as they sped up past the grandstands but the thing that surprised the crowd most was that President Sue's car complete with MOT, tax disc and all the other legal necessities does 0-60 in two seconds, 130 in under 6 seconds and 160mph in 9 seconds. | ||||
