Club Meetings - An evening of Fear

On 21st January 2002 skin specialist Carole Fear gave us a fascinating and sometimes disturbing talk on skin cancers. One third of her work is on biopsies, another third is removing ‘lumps and bumps', the final third involves skin cancers. Carole had prepared a flipchart illustrating a cross-section of skin layers and showing where the three types of cancer occur, plus a diagram indicating areas of the body that are most prone to skin cancers. The best way to avoid skin cancers is to avoid exposure to the sun.  Carole advocated the Australian slogan "SLIP, SLAP, SLOP" - SLIP on a shirt, SLAP on a hat, SLOP on suncream of greater than sun factor 15.

In his vote of thanks, John Brassington told us of the time he and his wife Sandra found a small dark mark on one of their children, who was aged three. The GP rushed them to hospital, thankfully it turned out to be nothing more serious than a small piece of chocolate!  John suggested we all go home and examine ourselves.  Lively applause showed our appreciation for a most informative talk.
